This couple represented a true testament to love and the strong bond of family and friendship! Right before the ceremony began, the minister's wife whispered in my ear that Bihn had come from Vietnam to the US as a baby with her refugee parents and their church has been her family's sponsors. Through the years the families lost touch as they moved across the country but then Binh called up one day and asked if this woman's husband, the minister at the church that had sponsored her family, would marry her.

The ceremony brought tears to my eyes. I've also never seen so many digital cameras and iPhones taking photos and videos all at once, as I did during this wedding ceremony!

Binh and Norm are truly a beautiful couple with so much heart. It was an honor to photograph their special day.

Wow! THis couple is so in love and so full of energy! They are totally awesome and were so relaxed all day long! We started out at the Mayflower Hotel in downtown, went all over taking portraits, and finally ended up at a rustic hidden venue in South Seattle for the ceremony and reception. We captured some great shots outside on the train tracks and even found an abandoned school bus that made a fun background for a portrait.

Hey Everyone,
Sorry I have not updated my blog in a while! Life got super busy all of a sudden!!! With weddings every weekend...sometimes two, it's been a bit hectic to say the least! We did have a really amazing time in Hawaii and although I got a little bit behind on my work, it was well worth it to have some fun as a family and relax on the beach! ...I'm almost caught up and I will post some of my latest weddings.

Life is an incredible gift...a newborn baby the purest form of that gift! I am so blessed to be able to share in capturing images of these tiny miracles! Thank you for this beautiful moment!

Are They Identical?

Those of you who know me personally know that I have twin girls. When they were born, my OBGYN was 95% sure that they were Fraternal Twins, which means that they are like any other brothers and sister and share 50% of the same DNA. However, as they've grown they have maintained the exact same height, weight (only fluctuates between 2-3 oz at any given time), body structure, etc. According to their pediatrician, this is more common among Identical Twins who share 100% of the same DNA, not Fraternal Twins, and he seems to think that they are Identical.

Here's what's interesting. When they were about 7 months old, a friend of mine brought it to my attention that there is a third, not so know type of twin called Semi-Identical and they are 75% of the same DNA! This is created by there being one single egg that splits prior to fertilization, and so in turn each identical half is fertilized by a separate sperm (which means there can also be boy/girl combinations of this type of twin). Crazy! I had no idea that the formation of twins was so complex before I found out I was pregnant with twins!

Here are some other fun twin facts I've acquired over the past couple of years:

If the babies are in the same sack in the womb, they are definitely identical
If the babies are in two separate sacks in the womb, they can be identical or fraternal (depending on when the egg splits in the case of identical twins).
Semi-Identical twins were relatively recently discovered (they used to believe this was not possible)
Identical twins (very very rarely) can actually by boy-girl combinations also...just saw this on the Discovery Channel! I had NO IDEA!
Identical twins can have slight differences because there are cells floating in the womb after the baby's initial formation that attach to one or the other twin, creating slight differences among them.
Identical twins can have different birth marks.
Mirrored identical twins have mirrored identical features and often one is right handed while the other is left handed.

Anyway, we are convinced that our girls are Semi-Identical Twins. We think this because we've always been able to tell them apart by looking at them...to us they do look different, however, I also know they look a lot alike based on how often I confuse them! Of course we could get a DNA test done to be sure, but it's more fun to guess.

Family Fun - Snapshots from the 4th of July Weekend

Just thought I'd share some personal moments with you all. I'm so happy that we got to all be together over this holiday weekend! We had a great time with the girls...went to the parade in the morning, then had a BBQ with friends and family, and later went to the beach again for the fireworks...which surprisingly the girls loved! They kept on saying "wooooooow" and pointing. It was super cute and fun to watch! We also got to go out on a friend's boat and it was thoroughly enjoyable...look at Naleah's face in the wind! Thanks for looking!

Passion for Weddings

I've always loved Weddings...everything about them! I remember attending my first Wedding as a little girl...my aunt and uncle's wedding...and I was so enthralled by it! I could tell, even at that small age that it was a day of love and joy and from then on I knew I would someday experience it. As a little girl I didn't spend hours planning or imagining who I would marry or what my wedding day would be like, but I did know that it would be special and perfect...and it was. We've been married now for going on eight years and it's hard to believe! Yes, I was very young when I got married...looking back, I would say too young. However, looking back I also have no regrets because although some great challenges have sprung forth, I have also learned a great deal about myself, about love, about relationships, about trust and forgiveness, passion and romance. I take these as gifts. I can honestly say that I am happy and I truly love my husband with all of my heart! I don't believe that there is one perfect person out there and I believe that any marriage will take work to maintain...just as a bountiful garden takes work. But just like those who grow luscious, fruitful gardens have passion and love for their work, so too do those who have bountiful marriages. It takes dedication, trust, and passion to get through the hard times...but if you get through them, you'll realize how much stronger you are and how much your partner does mean to you (of course not always...I of course I don't support staying in an unhealthy or abusive marriage). I just think many of us are quick to surrender these days and throw up our hands and say "it just didn't work!" and I wonder what those cute elderly couples you see dancing together at weddings would say to this. Can we really fool ourselves into thinking that in their 50+ years of marriage that they didn't ever struggle or have the desire to leave the marriage at one time or another? I think not! Love is the best thing in the world, yet it's probably also the most complicated!

Life has been full and busy since my last post...way too long ago! I will try to keep this blog updated more often so that you are able to see what we are up to.

I've been very blessed to have the continued support of my clients and the work continues to flow in, so thank you for your support! While times have been tough for everyone, I have broadened my horizons and ventured out of my typical subject matter to include other interests, which has been a lot of fun! These days I'm busy photographing Weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, Quinsiñeras, some Commercial Work for local shops, Headshots for Actors, Family Portraits, and even some Editorial Work.

Something I wrote almost a year ago, that I just saw again and felt inspired to share once more...

About my experience with pregnancy, maternity portraits, and my passion for this kind of photography here in beautiful Santa Barbara California.

"There is nothing more beautiful than a belly full and round holding and protecting a precious package of life. The journey of a lifetime starts inside of a woman's body. The love that surrounds this magical process is infinite and deeply rooted in a woman, a man, a sibling, a family.

I photograph this joy, this feeling, this magnificent moment, this intense love. Everyone gets to feel these emotions while pregnant. They come with creating new life.

Last week an expecting mother said to me, "you make me feel so amazing, like I am the most beautiful woman in the world! I don't know how you do it! And somehow I feel a connection to you, like you're celebrating my pregnancy with me".

My words were, "Thank you. I am celebrating with you!"

I became a photographer to empower the essence of beauty in women. It is the most incredible feeling to photograph a pregnant mother. They say that pregnant women glow, and I truly believe it! Ten years ago, I would have never guessed that I would be here now, living the life that I live! I have always been a photographer, always known I wanted to be a mother and a wife, and always loved living near the ocean and under the sun, but I would have never imagined I would be here, fulfilling all of these dreams at once and so happy! Life in Santa Barbara began for my husband and I five years ago and little by little we are feeling more and more at home! My passion for photography is what brought us here and the immense beauty of this place is what has kept us here! In the summer (and any other part of the year that is nice enough), the beach is our second home and surfing our favorite pastime! Life is great!...and just for fun...here is a list of a few things that has made this past year super special and unforgettable! #1: My surprise pregnancy and the birth of our gorgeous twin daughters Naleah Corin and Kyla Oriana (nothing can top that!... except actually being their mom, which is the most amazing thing ever!!!!). Moving to our new place that actually feels like a real home and having enough space for everything and everyone! Motherhood

With the birth of my twin daughters Naleah Corin and Kyla Oriana, I have become a new person. Life is full of miracles and these girls are truly two bright little lights in my world. I am grateful beyond measure for their arrival, their health, and their incredible shining personalities, still emerging. It feels right to be a mom and I am blessed to have them! It also makes me feel so much more connected to my clients of Willa Kveta Photography, now able to understand what they go through and have gone through as they enter into motherhood. It is the best gift in this world! I spend every day with my little ones and love being here to watch over them and nourish them. I have also begun working again and feel a strong pull to connect on a deeper, more intuitive level with my clients now. Willa Kveta Photography is my passion and I am so happy to have a career that feeds my passion. Being a mom is my true love however, and I will always and forever now put this first. Only 3 weeks (at the most) to go!

Our babies now weigh 5.3lbs and 5.7lbs. Both are very healthy and their heart rates are normal which means they are having no cord strangulation or lack of amniotic fluid, which is such a blessing! They are doing so well, I almost think they might make it to their 38 week mark (the latest our doctor will let us go). It's so amazing to think that we've come this far and also that there is 11lbs of baby in me, plus two placentas and two sacks of water!

Months gone by...

Somehow we have made it this far and are only weeks away from the birth of our babies! We are now 33 weeks along, and twins come at 36 weeks on average, so we know they could arrive at any time! It is exciting and amazing and we are so ready to meet our daughters! I know life will never be the same after this, and I am truly grateful that we have been blessed with these two little beings and blessed with the gift of parenthood.

Santa Barbara

It is strange to miss the rain so much! We have lived in Santa Barbara now for over four years and I have completely fallen in love with this town and its natural beauty and architecture! We are so lucky to be living here and have this be the place our girls will be born! It will always remain a special place to us now for that reason alone!
Still, it has been too dry for too long and we are suffering greatly as a state on fire! Just 2 months ago we were affected for weeks by the Zaca Fire and now fires are raging from here all the way to San Diego counties. My heart goes out to those who are suffering great losses during this parched time of year. I pray for rain and for this weather to change and bring some relief to the firefighters who must be so hot in their suits fighting flames that are out of control! Thank you to those who are doing all that they can to help put out the fires, and to those who are helping the people who are in need at this time!
On a very different note, as preparing parents we have joined the club for families with multiples, Santa Barbara Parents Of Multiples (SBPOM) and were excited to attend our first gathering last weekend and meet some wonderful families with whom I'm sure we will share our journey. It is incredible to have such a solid community here in Santa Barbara and we are blessed with so many opportunities and great people around us!
As for work, Willa Kveta Photography, my Maternity and Newborn Photography and Portraiture business here in Santa Barbara continues to thrive and grow and I am so overwhelmed by the amount of joy I have brought to new and expecting mothers through photo imagery! I have been blessed to be a part of they incredible journeys, and it truly makes me happy! Capturing these special intimate moments is what brings joy to my heart and I cannot say how lucky I am to be a witness to life and to family bonds.
I am very thankful for this life and all the beauty that is around us!

Twin Update

I forgot to officially announce that we are having 2 girls!!!! Friday was our latest appointment with Dr. Soffici and we got wonderful news that both girls are growing at a perfect and healthy rate! On Friday, they each weighted 1.3 lbs, which means they are the same size a singleton baby is at this gestational age. We also got the best news ever, that they each have their own placentas, (and we already knew that they each have their own sacks), which means they have no chance of complications! For me, this news comes as a great relief and really helps me to relax and enjoy each day without worries. The girls are kicking stronger and more and more each day, which is such a thrill!
We recently joined the local Santa Barbara Parents of Multiples group and are excited to attend our first meeting this Saturday. It will be so fun to meet other families with twins and triplets and ask them questions about what we should expect. It is truly such a gift to be chosen by these babies to be their parents. Never in a million years would I have thought I would be blessed with twins, yet here we are! Life is a miracle! I am so happy!

Back from Seattle...

Although I truly love California, the beach, the sun, etc. it was so refreshing to wake up to rain for the past week while visiting family up on Whidbey. Those fresh, cold, damp mornings and foggy afternoons that turn into night around 4:00pm can be so cozy at times. We had a great trip and truly enjoyed our stay up in the Northwest! Everything up there in nature this time of year is so green and wet. I love it! To be completely honest, the tropics are my true love because they have the warmth of the sun mixed with the rain, creating life cycles that happen so quickly you can almost see the growth happen. These are all things I adore. Still, a nice fire and the smell of wood burning are things that bring good feelings to my heart. And of course, seeing so many of my beautiful friends and my family was awesome!
As for the babies…they continue to grow and their kicks are stronger every day! I'm so excited to be a mom and experience first hand what I have been witnessing for years with the women I have photographed. It is an amazing journey and I am loving it all! I feel so blessed to have been given twins and even though I know my belly will be huge by the end of this pregnancy (I'm already huge at only 5 months!), I have a good feeling that my babies will be born nice and big (for twins) and of course very healthy and happy babies! And that is all that matters of course!

First Real Kicks!

Our babies are getting strong, and today for the first time I could feel their kicks from the outside! I can't wait for Walter to feel them move! He was at work when they were really going at it and since then they've been sleeping. I'm sure he'll get plenty of chances over the next few months to feel them before they are born...and when they are born it will even be more exciting!

Yesterday we got a 4-D ultrasound done and saw our babies faces for the first time! They are so cute!!!! We got a few big surprises also, but I'll wait to post them for a few more weeks (until after the guessing game is over). We are so excited and the babies are very healthy, strong and doing wonderfully, so that is all perfect news! I'll post more about them soon.

My Inspiring Friends Who Run Their Own Businesses

About a year ago, a friend told me about a program that she had just completed that was a training for women in business. The program, WEV, (Women's Economic Venture) soon became part of my life. Not only does it focus on writing and completing a business plan and teach all about the necessary aspects of running your own business, but it becomes a social network of like-minded individuals all with one goal: starting their own business or making their business better. Although I had been in business for myself for quite some time already, it was such a good refresher and so eye opening as far as the knowledge that I gained from the experience. Each night would have a specific focus and usually included a guest speaker with expertise in that subject area. But getting back to the part about community and a social network, I have found that it was the best gift that came from participating in the WEV program. When our class came to an end, a small group of inspiring women came together to form our Mastermind group. We meet every other Tuesday to share our business accomplishments, express our frustrations and difficulties, and support each other in our endeavors. Our group has spawned new and lasting friendships and we are there for each other whether we are dealing with business or personal hurtles and triumphs!

Merissa Pratt is a sweet and creatively gifted photographer and painter. Roses inspire much of her personal work. She is mother to Leo, a big and ‘scary’, yet timid beautiful doggy. She is also co-owner of Lauren and Pratt Photography, a successful wedding and event photography business.

Her partner Michelle Lauren is a kind and energetic woman with such a big heart. She is creative and knows how to make things happen and get jobs done. My Mom, Terri Fristad, a certified Developmental Support Educator, has been studying and working with children for over 30 years and has become a wonderful inspiration in so many children’s lives by helping them in their developmental processes. She is loved by all her pupils and so attune to what each individual child needs. Journey - stage 1 of motherhood

Learning I was pregnant and then to get the surprise that we're having twins was overwhelmingly exciting and scary and truly amazing. It took a just a few days to become settled with the idea of having two babies at once, but now, I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. As my belly grows and my babies grow inside of me, I am truly in awe of life and how magical it is to be responsible for bringing new life into the world. I am already so in love with my babies and await their arrival with so much excitement and anticipation. Life has shifted into a new realm and we couldn't be happier. We are ready to share our lives and our love with our children. Here is the first picture of our two tiny babies when they were only a month and a half into their journey to earth and to us as their parents. We are so happy.
